Lookback: SSF Camps

So far in 2023 the Scottish Surfing Federation has run 2x coaching development camps in Portugal with top level Internationally recognised coaches; Llwelyn Whittaker from South Africa who went to the Olympics with Team Germany and also Joao Antunes who trained SSF coaches and athletes on pre and during event coaching at the European Surfing Championships in July.

Our Peniche coaching development camp in February focused on surfing technique, video analysis and leading a session, heat drills and heat strategy with from Llwelyn but also strength and conditioning and surfing warmups with Alan Bisseker, videography for coaching with Malcolm Anderson, sport psychology with Ana Ramires, surfing performance support with Brendon Ferrier and judging criteria with Brendon Ferrier and Mark Boyd.

Our June Junior Squad camp in Melvich focused on competition preparation and surfing technique with the junior squad and served as an opportunity for less experienced coaches to learn from Scottish National Junior coach Craig Sutherland. There were also opportunities to learn about the benefits of surf-skate training as well as strength and conditioning and diet.

There are more camps planned for 2023 including the Menehune Camp in September focusing on an introduction to competitive and performance surfing for 8-10year olds to prepare them for the SSF junior series but this camp will also allow national coaches to develop regional coaches skills and for SSF judges to gain valuable experience.

Para Surf Scotland will have similar training opportunities as the Menehune Camp but with a focus on Para Surfing.
