Meet the #ScotChamps2018 Event Crew…
|Scottish National Surfing Championships 2018 – Event Crew
Chris Clarke – Contest Director
This will be Chris’ first time as Contest Director for the Scottish National Surfing Championships, but as the coach of the national team with extensive knowledge of the surfing conditions on the Caithness coastline, Chris is the ideal man for the job.
Henry Jackson – MC.
Having recently been announcing at the Winter Olympics Henry is without a doubt the most high profile of member of the #ScotChamps2018 event crew. Henry will be back to entertain us at the event for the 3rd year.
Tiago Matos – External Head Judge (European Surfing Federation)
European Surfing Federation / Portugese Surfing Federation technical director and head judge – there is no-one with more knowledge and experience in Europe than Tiago and this year we are proud to announce he will be bringing this wealth of knowledge to Thurso for our nationals to oversee our judges in the event head judge role and also to assist in improving their skills.
Lisa Monteith – Head of Officiating (Scottish Surfing Federation)
Lisa will be one of the senior SSF judges on the panel but also in charge of coordinating the judging team from the SSF side as we have some external judges brought in. Lisa has quickly become one of the most experienced SSF judges judging both the EuroJuniors and EuroSurf in recent years and now sits on the committee of the Scottish Surfing Federation and European Surfing Federation.
Juvenal Dufaur – Senior judge (Scottish Surfing Federation)
Juvenal has judged the Scottish National Surfing Championships and the UK Pro Surf Tour Thurso event for several years now and is one of our most experienced judges. Juvenal has also judged at the EuroSurf.
Jason McIlvenny – Senior Judge (Scottish Surfing Federation)
Jason has also judged the Scottish National Surfing Championships for several years and is one of the few SSF judges to have gained their ISA Level 3 judging qualification.
Joanne Hillman – External Judge (Surfing England)
Jo helped us at last years event and enjoyed herself so much she’s back again this year! Jo also has lots of judging experience at World and European level.
Kerry Powell – External Judge (Surfing England)
Kerry also has judging experience at World and European level, was a regular judge on the UK Pro Surf Tour and judged the Scottish National Surfing Championships in 2017. Along with Jo and Lisa, Kerry will help make up what can be at times a majority female judging panel and demonstrates the pro-activeness in equality by the SSF during times when judging panels in surfing more often than not tend to be male dominated.
Neil Simmonds – Judge (Scottish Surfing Federation)
Neil has judged several Scottish National Surfing Championships and is a valuable member of our panel and a regular fixture in the Thurso-East lineup.
Jason Hagon – Judge (Scottish Surfing Federation)
Jason, who studied at Aberdeen University, has competed several times at the British Universities Surfing Championships and has been on the #ScotChamps2018 judging panel in 2016 and 2017.

Paul who works at the local McColls in Thurso is a great surf fan and is always down supporting the local surfers at any contests in Thurso. This year Paul will be taking on beach marshall duties such as allocating rash vests and timing and giving heat signals.
Amy Beattie – Tabulation, results, social media
Amy who as you can see is a keen surfer is volunteering at this years event assisting with officiating and also getting results out to the MC, competitors and also on social media
Malcolm Anderson – Photographer & Videographer
Malcolm is one of the biggest assets to the Scottish Surfing Federation – his photos and video always of great value for our media.
Martin McQueenie – Lifeguard
Owner of Pro Liberty Surfboards, Momentum and all around Scottish Surfing legend Martin McQueenie will be in charge of safety at this years event and also assisting in the coordinating of the comp setup.
Frazer Reid – Competition Setup Co-ordinator
Frazer, who is the owner of Far Cabinets, makes the trophies for the Scottish Nationals every year. Frazer has also helped us out with fabricating some of the competition equipment and this year will be in charge of co-ordinating the competition equipment. We encourage all SSF members to offer their assistance to Frazer on competition mornings.
William Watson – Scottish Surfing Federation President
Mark Boyd – SSF secretary and event organiser (pre competition) but also competitor at the event. Please don’t speak to Mark during the event, Mark is busy, leave Mark alone. Speak to Chris 😉
Christian Surfers Scotland – CSS will be providing hot drinks and food to our judges and volunteers as well as selling snacks and drinks to spectators and competitors throughout the event.
There may be times when additional judges at the event may be required.
