Boardmasters Round Up – Success for Callie
|Great week at the Boardmasters festival with a big team of Scottish Surfers (& their families) all making the long trek down South to compete at the BYD Pro & Boardmasters Open Juniors events in Newquay. With 11 surfers from Scotland down taking part in the contest it was a busy week on the beach for the large Scottish Support & in between the occasional downpours of rain spirits were high amongst the Scottish crew on the beach.
Round 2 in the mens open did see some early Scottish v Scottish heat draws in the BYD Pro with both Mark Boyd & Craig McLachlan paired together and unfortunately unable to progress through. Also matched up in the Juniors round 1 were Finn Clark & Charlie Pugh, Finn finishing 2nd to go into the next round and then the Parkin brothers, Ansel & Ebon in the same round one heat as each other, with Ansel claiming bragging rights & making it into round 2. In round 1 of the Girls Juniors there were 5 surfers from Scotland in the draw of 24 with some of the best young surfers from Europe.
The standout performace from the Scots coming from 13 year old Callie Cruickshank who made it through to the finals on Saturday cheered on in front of a packed crowd watching on a sunny day at Fistral in the juniors. Some great surfing saw Callie consistently make it through some tough heats and coming up against the best surfers in Britain did Scotland proud taking 4th in on the podium. Callie did Scotland proud and entertained the large contingent of Scottish support who had made the long trek down south to support all the Scottish surfers from the beach.
All in it was great watching all the juniors competing and some only narrowly missed out on progressing but all were in the mix which was a great positive to take forward to the next comp! Well done also to all the parents who were constantly shuttling the groms to & from the beach, great to see.
