Josh Christopherson - Scottish Bodyboard Champion 2015
This year was the first time since the early 1990s that bodyboarding had been in the SSF (Scottish Surfing Federation) nationals, the reintroduction was due to the SSF joining the ISA (the International Surfing Association, the world governing authority for surfing and also the European Surfing Federation) and a need for the SSF to have bodyboard representation at future team events including EuroSurf Scheduled for Morocco in September.
The straight four person final was held at a venue around the corner from the main surfing competition at Thurso East.
It was extremely setty with complete flat conditions between sets that were coming in every five to ten minutes. Each set had only two or three short bowly waves meaning over the course of the 30minute final there were only around 8 contestable waves. As a result there was more pressure to perform and ride out of a trick.

Max Fergusson Hook got off to the best start with a nice tube to air roll on a set wave, the youngster had rattled the old guard. Tim Christopherson got the next decent wave allowing him to get pitted and hit the ramp section out of the barrel, he busted a lofty air roll spin, which would’ve been impossible to beat, unfortunately the wave backed off on landing so the move was incomplete.
Josh Christopherson got the last set of the contest and the wave bent round the reef perfectly allowing for the barrel followed by a launch ramp this time the wave didn’t back off and he pulled the air roll spin, the wave reformed allowing a reverse spin milked into the inside for a roll on the closeout section.
Phoebe was left with scraps but managed to get a few cover ups.
It was a tightly fought contest that could have gone any way but in the end it was the old veteran Josh Christopherson (red) in 1st, Tim Christopherson (black) 2nd, Max Ferguson Hook (yellow) 3rd and Phoebe Strachan 4th.
Josh Christopherson of Dunbar and Phoebe Strachan also of Dunbar have been named as the Men’s and Ladies Scottish Bodyboarding Champions respectively and will both compete for Scotland at Eurosurf in Morocco in September.
